Attorney Lewis Represents Injured Bicyclists

When motorists don't share the road, we hold them accountable

Cycling is a fun, healthy and environmentally friendly way to get from place to place. Most drivers share the road with cyclists. Unfortunately, not everyone does. And sometimes, accidents occur. In car accidents involving bicycles, the cyclist almost always requires immediate medical treatment while the occupants of the bigger vehicle typically walk away unscratched.

Without the protection of an enclosed vehicle, bicycle riders hit by other vehicles often sustain broken bones, head injuries, internal organ damage and other potentially fatal injuries.

Under Washington law, both cyclists and motorists have certain responsibilities. Some rules cyclists are expected to follow include:

  • Riding as far to the right in a lane as is safe. This does not necessarily mean they must hug the right side of the road - debris and other obstructions may make the far right unsafe.
  • Ride no more than two abreast - and do so only when it is safe.
  • Use hand signals before turning.
  • Yield to pedestrians.

Some rules motorists are expected to follow include:

  • Yield to oncoming cyclists in intersections just as they would to any other vehicle.
  • Yield the right of way to both pedestrians and cyclists in crosswalks.
  • Leave at least three feet of space when passing a bicycle.

In cases where either a cyclist or motorist does not follow the rules of the road, the cyclist is most often the one injured. If you've been hurt, attorney Richard E. Lewis can help.

Representing injured cyclists

After a bicycle accident, you'll likely be up against the insurance company representing the motorist who hit you. That can be an uphill battle, since insurance companies have teams of adjusters and attorneys working to reduce or deny your claim. You need someone on your side to represent your interests.

At Richard E. Lewis, P.S., we have decades of experience helping injured cyclists in Spokane and throughout eastern Washington. We'll listen to the facts of your case and build a legal strategy to get the compensation you need to move forward. We know how to counter the arguments used by the insurance companies and push for a settlement that will cover the full cost of your accident, including medical bills, lost wages, pain and suffering and other expenses. We prepare every case as though it's going to trial. And while many do settle out of court, we won't hesitate to take it to trial if that's what's needed to protect your interests.
